REVIEW: Some Like it Hot
Some Like It Hot has taken the Broadway scene by storm since it debuted on Broadway last year. Based on the classic film that made Marilyn Monroe a megastar, Some Like It Hot has garnered widespread critical acclaim from the start. This original musical was nominated for a whopping 13 Tony Awards; winning for Best Musical and Best Choreography. Critics praised its clever humor, lively score, and dazzling performances. The film pushed boundaries when it opened in 1959, and is widely credited with weakening the grip of the Hays Code that policed morality in Hollywood for more than two decades. What better time to remind folks of the dangers of moral panic than with a story so iconic, it was among the first 25 films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
The show breathes new life into the iconic story of two musicians, Joe and Jerry, who are on the run after witnessing a mob hit in 1929 Chicago. To escape, they disguise themselves as women and join an all-female band headed to Florida. As “Josephine” and “Daphne,” they navigate the challenges of their new identities, with Joe falling for the band’s glamorous singer, Sugar, while Jerry attracts the attention of a wealthy suitor. As the mob closes in, chaos ensues, leading to hijinks and hilarious misunderstandings, ultimately revealing the absurdities of gender roles and the power of love. The musical is a delightful blend of comedy, romance, and lively music, capturing the spirit of the Roaring Twenties.
Given the bounty of Tony nominations and awards, expectations were high and the production did not disappoint. The stunning performances from the cast showcase their energy and comedic timing. Spectacular choreography adds to the excitement along with the colorful costumes and set designs transport audiences to the Roaring Twenties. This production is filled with glamour and makes for a wonderful night out. Fans of the original film will appreciate how the musical pays homage to the classic while offering a fresh perspective. Some Like It Hot is a hot ticket indeed.
Some Like It Hot is at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis through October 20, 2024. Tickets start at $40.
