REVIEW: Diavolo – Transit Space
Saturdy night I had the pleasure of seeing Diavolo at The Ordway. Diavolo describes its performances as “architecture in motion” with “daredevil dancers and gymnasts” that leap and tumble on architectural elements in a “thrilling, high-risk performance style.” Needless to say, this sort of description set my expectations quite high.
Transit Space includes two pieces. The first being modern, contemporary dance. I would not describe this performance as thrilling or incorporating gymnastics. That said, it was mesmerizing and the choreography was incredible. For a single, nonstop dance piece to capture my attention for about an hour straight – BRAVO! The set was minimal, yet exciting. The props were used in such a fascinating way. The second piece had a younger feel with more gymnastics and hip hop elements. I would say that describing it as a high-risk performance style is a bit of an overstatement. Both me and my guest found ourselves the slightest bit disappointed at the end. It was absolutely fabulous modern dance but not quite what they had advertised themselves to be. In the end, it’s all about expectations. I feel they should have sold themselves as brilliant modern dancers instead of daredevils.
The problem with abstract dance is that it is so difficult to describe, at least for a layman like myself. I can say that Diavolo has marvelous choreography and a talented cast. If you enjoy modern dance, they are a must-see group!
Unfortunately, Diavolo was only in town for one night. Click here to find out more about the upcoming performances in the Target Dance Series at The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
