REVIEW: Back to the Future: The Muscial

Back to the Future: The Musical is a high-energy, time-traveling romp that captures the spirit of the iconic 1985 film while adding its own twist and just enough new humor. Playing at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, the stage adaptation is packed with nostalgic charm, dazzling effects, and memorable performances.

When you think of the premise of turning a movie based on time-travel into a stage show, the logistics seems challenging. How can the audience join Marty McFly on this journey? But the stage design and special effects were incredible. A dynamic, rotating stage and advanced digital projections brought the DeLorean’s time travel sequences to life almost like magic. At points it felt like you were on a 4D theme park ride—really well done.

The cast was exceptional, with standout performances by the leads. When we are as familiar with actors as we are with Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd it can be hard not to be highly skeptical of imitators. But the actors portraying Marty McFly, Doc Brown, George McFly and Lorraine were outstanding. And the singing, dancing, and costumes of the ensemble were a visual feast.

Musically, the show strikes a good balance between new numbers and the classic hits that fans expect. Original songs like “Put Your Mind to It” and “It Works” are catchy and energetic. Familiar favorites like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Earth Angel” drew enthusiastic applause from the audience. And those first few chords that started off the whole show… gave the audience, some dressed in colorful 80’s neons and Marty McFly attire, chills and solicited a roar of approval.

Overall, Back to the Future: The Musical at the Orpheum is an exhilarating ride that honors its source material while standing on its own as a unique theatrical experience. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the film or a newcomer to the story, this production is a fun, entertaining journey that will leave you with a smile on your face. Don’t miss your chance to hop into the DeLorean and travel back to the ’80s – it’s a trip worth taking!
