Grow your own lemons – even in an apartment in Minnesota!
I’ve always adored citrus trees but was mistaken in believing that they were only to be enjoyed by those living in warm, sunny locales such as Florida and California. I was delighted when my good friend, The Inadvertent Hippie, told me about dwarf meyer lemon trees. These trees can be planted in containers and pruned to a desired height/width. You keep them outside in the summer and simply move them to a sunny spot indoors for the winter months. Here is a helpful link on how to care for these trees. You can use similar techniques for lime, grapefruit, mandarin and orange trees as well!
It’s nearing the end of the season for the best time to purchase these trees and so selection is slim. I got the last meyer lemon tree at Gertens in Inver Grove Heights. My one year old tree was $35 and looks similar to the one in the picture to the left, but is shorter and bushier. Gertens said that by we can keep the bushy shape or prune it to look more like a mini tree. Although it’s only a year old, it has two baby lemons growing already. I’m psyched! We Minnesotans can have it all.
