A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie

The rituals of the holiday season bring a comfort all their own, year after year; as the nights grow darker, whatever else might be going on out in the world, we can count on A Christmas Carol the way a storm-tossed sea captain does a beacon on a cliff.  Marking its 50th season, A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie is as more of an institution in Minnesota than the Walker’s Spoonbridge and Cherry (36 years) or the Timberwolves (35 years).  The production has changed in ways large and small over that span, with three major overhauls (four if you count the video-only production during the pandemic in 2020).  Little has changed this year from the previous few go arounds, and why not?  While it might be artistically interesting to try a new adaptation every couple of years, it would defeat the desire for consistency that makes the show such a stalwart.  There’s hardly a thing to criticize about the production; at this point it’s a well-oiled machine.
