Underneath the Lintel thrusts audiences into a librarian’s quest to solve the riddle of a book mysteriously returned after a 123-year stint on the overdue list. Pat O’Brien, best known for his role as Mr. Dewey on Saved by the Bell, applies three decades of acting savvy to the role of the librarian, who throughout the play delivers a lecture incorporating a suitcase full of clues and a blackboard to explain his worldwide search for the book’s borrower. Lauded by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune as one of the best performances of 2009, O’Brien’s interpretation of the librarian enthralls theater lovers with a nuanced portrayal of a reclusive, damaged man searching for answers about his own failings, even as he becomes consumed by his odyssey.
